The eldest son of Artim and Pirim, Asiv grew up with rest of the Kimris family (two brothers and two sisters) in the town of Cademan. Artim was the captain of the “Haul her Down”, a gnome built trading ship. His parents were great friends and admirers of the gnomes, specifically for their abilities with machinery and inventions.
Asiv spent his childhood around the docks of Cademan learning trader/boat skills from his father, other boat captains and crews. Preparing for the day he would be of age and could join a crew. At the age of thirteen that day finally arrived. Asiv was hired on the crew of “The Blind Eye” another short trade jobber, like his fathers boat. (Note: Short trade boats took jobs that kept them out of port for less than a week. Usually for only a day or two at a time. These captains enjoyed home life.) At the age of 15 he met and fell in love with Seria. When Asiv was not out on a job he could be found by her side, enjoying his life with her.
When Asiv was seventeen the Great War changed all that. In its infancy the war was a far off problem. But in time, as it grew to encompass the entire region, people were required to choose sides, either for the gnomes, the elves, or stay out of the conflict. The Kimris family stood with the gnomes, and helped in anyway possible. Sometimes using their trading skills for supplies, sometimes using their boats as transport or even attack vessels, or just using the network of contacts the traders have grown over the years.
As the pressures of war increased, Asiv found himself less and less at home. By now his brothers were already crewing on boats too. He lost one brother at the Battle of Calgin, and then the other at the Green Sea Massacre. Then one day the terrible news reached him, the town of Cademan had been sacked and all of the inhabitants killed. Asiv rushed for home, crewing on any boat that was heading for Cademan. The final leg of the journey was done solo, in a canoe. Burying the bodies of his sisters, his mother, and Seria, Asiv vowed to bring down the elves.
Asiv left to find his father, crewing on boats and ships from place to place. Searching for news of “Haul her down” in a war torn world. Finally he learned of his father’s flight to southern waters from survivors of the Battle of Gorgin.
In time Asiv found other survivors of Cademan, men who had also been elsewhere during her downfall. Joining their fortunes together, these comrades had a boat built and named her “Cademan’s Call”. For years “Cademan’s Call” assisted the gnomes in their fight, but at the last, it was futile. At the final stand of the gnomes, most of the crew was lost.
The gnomes surrender devastated Asiv’s hopes, dreams, and his desire for vengance. As a shattered man, Asiv returned to the “Cademan’s Call” with Stilgir (the shipwright) the only survivors of the crew. Being the only owner left, he took the “Cademan’s Call” and renamed it “Never Home” and so began his career as a trader/smuggler. He now lives life for today, and the next cargo or job.
