Kai Eltros, Horizon (Ru Warden)

Kai was born to Melina and Tar Eltros. Tar was first officer for a gnomish cargo airship. Melina was separated from Tar for significant stretches of time due to the travels of his ship. While he was away she would work in a dwarfish shop specializing in the construction and repair of delicate and sophisticated navigation equipment.

Three months after Kai was born Tar was reported to have died in a shipping accident. Kai spent a lot of his childhood at the local airdock; with the airman there acting almost as a substitute father. His trips to the airdock were more frequent during storms. When the wind and thunder were strong Kai would sit at the edge of the dock and gaze out into the pouring rain. Some thought his deceased father spoke to him in the thunder or that he heard prophecy in the sound of the wind. These conjectures led to him acquiring the nickname ‘child of thunder’.

Later, when Kai was seven, his mother fell ill and passed into a coma. Melina was not expected to survive. It was during his mother’s coma that Kai first met Horizon Reth Yu. The Horizon was impressed with Kai’s extreme affinity for air and his amazing personal flow. Reth offer to take Kai as an apprentice. Kai was unwilling to continue to watch his mother’s slow and inevitable demise. He left her in his grandmother’s care for the short time left to her and departed with the Horizon.

Due to his impressive affinity to air Kai started along the path to the Enlightenment of the Sapphire. In this his intrinsic knowledge of the element proved a great boon to training. Soon Kai had mastered the Sapphire and was taught to the ‘Current of Endless Ruin’, the combat art of the Wardens.

Sapphire Kai, though extremely young, was to be stationed on the Ever Errant but before the placement was made the gnomish airship was destroyed in a battle with the invading elves. Kai traveled abroad for several months waiting on a new position to open. In this time he found that his mother Melina had not died but had recovered from her coma. Kai was reunited with his mother. It had been several years since parting with her and he was now a different person but was overjoyed that his mother lived. Kai visits her to this day when time and circumstance allows.

After a time Reth realized that the ongoing war between the gnomes and elves would make a placement on any airship dangerous for Kai. At this point Reth recommended that Kai proceed to attempt the Emerald. The Horizon was very anxious about placing the young Kai in a dangerous circumstance in his extreme youth.

So Kai proceeded to undergo Emerald training. Toward the end of his training Kai accompanied his master on a raid to clear a gnomish blockade of a major oceanic port. Though Kai was not required to engage in any combat actions he was able to learn from the experience the application of stealth and strategy.

Just before Kai was to complete his Emerald training Horizon Serena claimed to have a strong augury indicating that Kai should attempt Horizon Enlightenment as soon as possible. This was thought to be in anticipation of the loss of several temples to the god of fire at the end of the war.

So it was that Horizons Reth and Selena instructed Emerald Kai in the path of the Horizon. The experience was not a pleasant one. Kai had not even completely internalized his previous training fully before being pressed into this new world. In the end Kai was able to obtain the Horizon. Reth thought it would be best if Kai had a chance to rest from his labors before taking an assignment, which would be the last step in his training.

Description

Kai Eltros Horizon is young at the age of fourteen and short at a height of 5’ 6’’. He has green eyes. His hair is short blond faded almost to silver. He wears a dark grey shirt with a high collar and black pants. Over this he wears a matching black cloak. The back of the cloak and both collar tips are embroidered with the sign of the horizon.

He carries a katana with grey hilt and sheath along with a collapsible steal bow. A parrying dagger is hidden behind his back and a survival knife is stored in his left boot. His left wrist is home to a bracer in which is wound a length of steel wire and grappling hooks and locks.
